"By design, science laboratories are "energy hogs." They use once-through air and prohibit recirculation of exhaust. It is estimated that on average, 50% of the energy used in operating a laboratory is attributed to the ventilation air - filtering, heating, cooling and dehumidifying large amounts of 100% outside air, then moving this conditioned make-up air through the lab and exhausting it."
